the gist of this cnn story is that almost a dozen workers came from the philippines to work in a bakery in beverly hills and were treated like slaves -- but they got rescued by the dept of labor -- thank good ness

and then some of us do this to our own selves on purpose -- it's actually illegal if done to others --- what a conundrum
It happens in every first world country in every business trade. And it starts with the so called victims not educating themselves about their rights and hanging on to their dreams and hopes even when treated badly (because once they cancel their employment they would be send home - even for free, from the government - but they don't wany to), it continues with employers taking advantage of poverty in third world countries to avoid paying high salaries - or salaries at all - and it ends with the government itself giving out work permits to people from abroad without following up on their situation and wellbeing. In my opinion this will never stop unless the world changes...sad!
As long as we continue to worship at the feet of the almighty dollar, and have little regard for human life atrocities will continue....
