How about using  cake boards or foam core covered in fondant/modeling chocolate to make the lid. Wooden dowels to hold the lid open. Where the lid rests on the cake secure with chocolate/candy melts or royal icing.

If you want the lid to be edible how about a making a big sugar cookie? You can still cover it in fondant.

Both Great ideas! The sugar cookie idea is good, i would like it to be edible if possible, but im scared it will be to heavy and fall apart.

Another  edible choice is RKT,  which they sell in sheets, so all you have to do is cut it to the size you need ,and cover with fondant.

I made a very similar groom's cake for my son-in-law. I made it out of cookie dough and just baked it a little longer so that it was hard and crunchy. It held up wonderfully. Good luck!
