I am hoping to get help here. My daughter would like to have Space related BD party, and I would like to attempt  a cake, looking like Nebula or so. I found on you tube direction how to paint craft, and got an idea that would look good on cake. Would that work if I cover my cake with black fondant and do the same painting technique? Using food coloring mixed with what do you think? Here is the link for the craft. I never painted on fondant before...or maybe I don't use fondant and just icing...what would be better for painting? Thank you so much.

You could do black fondant and paint it with royal icing in different colors. It could thinned down or made thicker depending on how you want it to look. And you could splatter it on the cake at the end to make little stars.
