This is my first time making this size cake to fill, do I have to make two cakes or is it easier to split the cake.

You could do it anyway here. I just suggest to use a cake lifter to help you fill it. But if you prefer a thicker cake (which I normally do) stack it so you can fill it before putting the top half on. It all depends on the needs, best of luck!
depends on your amount of servings needed -- a two layer cake that could be torted into 4 layers would feed twice as many as a one layer cake that could be torted into two layers -- so depends on your desired outcome
in other words do you want a 2-3" tall final product or a 4-5" one
