Buttercream

Why does my buttercream icing taste like Crisco? I use 1/2 c butter, 1/2 c Crisco, vanilla, milk, and 4 c powdered sugar. I have never had a problem before, but I doubled the recipe this time. could that make a difference?

Did you remember to double the vanilla?


Add some extra extract and see if it helps...

Beat it a bit longer and see if it helps...

Add a few more tablespoons of butter or heavy cream and see if it helps...

My recipe calls for all Crisco since I live in the humid South.  I add 1 tsp. vanilla, 1/2 tsp. almond, and 2 tsps of butter flavorings.  Adding another 1/2 tsp. of lemon flavoring helps curb the sweetness.  So just adjust the flavorings to suit your needs but that is definitely the way to cut the Crisco taste.
