Attaching Leaves For A Topper

Gosh, I'm full of questions today.

I'm working on a cake that will basically have a pile of leaves as the topper. Think of picking up a pile of fallen leaves and just arranging them under a vase or a candle holder.

I'm not wiring these leaves, so how would you attach them to each other? Or is the best way to just transport them unattached and then just pile them up on site?

I'd mound them up and use melted candy melts or royal icing to stick them together in strategic spots. Then carry it separately and put it on the cake at the site.
