Hi Everyone!!
This is my first post but I am obsessed with all the different conversations on this site. I just signed up with Icing Smiles which provides children with cakes that have a serious illness. I received my first request and will be baking and decorating a Curious George cake at the end of September. Does anyone have any awesome Icing Smiles stories and pictures of the cakes you've donated?
Thanks and hope everyone is having a great day!!!!
Vanessa
I had to go look this up because I have never heard of it. I just signed up to volunteer as well. I'm no professional but would love to help. Let us know about how your experience went!!!
I did a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake with smash cakes for twins with cystic fibrosis (1st Bday). Icing smiles asks for "fun cake" and "wow" cake (or something like that). The "wow" cake is the "over the top" element cake, I guess reserved for the really/ terminally ill. In Texas, they monitored (cced) communication between baker and family so that the request was not "bridezilla" style. My family was very nice and very appreciative. The smash cakes cannot be requested, but I offered since it was a first bday. I did candy melts stars with their names on it.
Those are really cute.!!I'm so happy Brooke14 signed up!! It's my understanding that each family is allowed only 1 "dream cake" from the organization. I am doing a "dream cake" so it's a lot of pressure since the family gets only 1 :) The little boy receiving my cake is also a twin; he is living with half a heart and spent the first 8 months of his life hospitalized. The mother seems very laid back so all the pressure is what I am putting on myself :)
Hi Brooke 14!
I am making the cake for September 26th :)
Have you gotten any requests yet? It took a couple weeks to get a cake request
No, unfortunately. I'm actually curious as to how often this program is used around my area. I can't wait to see what you create. What has the family asked for? I have twins so this makes me even more excited for your cake.
The family asked for a curious George themed cake, I get to make anything I want within that theme so it's going to be fun :)
Wow! Two weeks! I signed up well over a year ago, and I haven't received a request yet. I guess it all depends on where you are! Can't wait to see your pictures. :)
Oh gosh! I'm in Southern California and I was complaining about the 2 weeks because I had my cousin sign up who lives near Columbus, Ohio and she got a request the day after she signed up!
I have only been to Tennessee once, spent several days in Nashville, sooo much fun :)
I've been registered with them for maybe four years or so and have done 5 cakes for them in New Jersey. Have stayed friendly with some of the families too! Had two other requests that were cancelled at last minute by the families due to emergency. Will try to post photos in a bit.
Mymamacakes- please do post your pictures :)
I'm more excited for this cake than any other cake before :)
I'm hoping to register my country as I've been so inspired after meeting Tracey a few years ago and learning how much of joy my fellow cake artists bring. I'm already doing cakes here in Trinidad, would love to include other Caribbean islands
This was the only "dream cake" I've done. The rest are party cakes.
This is the first one I ever did and I've stayed friendly with this family.
Thanks. That's it, over the course of 4 years. My last two were done in quick succession, maybe within a month of each other.
It's a great cause and you'll enjoy it. I always feel more pressure with these cakes than any, because of course you want this child to love it.
I am definitely feeling the pressure but I'm excited :)
thank you for sharing all your great cakes!!
