Hi All,

Is anyone familiar with the Cobb County, GA home bakery requirements to have a legal at home bakery? I'm new to the baking world and am vaguely familiar with what I need to do but can't seem to find the right websites to get this info. I know State, City and County have to approve it, other than that I'm lost. lol Any help you can give me to point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! :)

Thanks,

Nicole

Here is a link to the Cobb county health department

an also a link for the cottage food law in Georgia

I would call your local health department you need to speak with someone in environmental health and also call your city for zoning. It appears to me that there isn't an option to have a home based bakery just cottage food law but I would call until I talked to someone that could give me a definitive answer :)

hope that helps

Thank you! I did reasearch the cottage food act but I make cheesecakes and since they require refridgeration that new law doesn't aply to me. :(

I was thinking if I built a second kitchen in my home that passes code compliance I would be ok to proceed. I'll look into the links and suggestions you have. Thanks so much for your advice!

I am also working to get all proper licenses in Georgia (in Augusta).  It is confusing.  If you haven't thought about it yet, you soon will, so here is something you need to know about sole proprietorship:  https://www.sba.gov/content/sole-proprietorship-0.  Some people set up an LLC but I am not there yet.  I have to register a business name because I am "DBA" = doing business as.

Cupadeecakes wrote about having a separate kitchen and the GA food cottage law here:

http://cupadeecakes.blogspot.com/2013/03/cottage-food-law-in-georgia.html.  You might find it interesting.

Check this site for some helpful basic info:  http://www.georgia.org/small-business/start/.  Click to look at the "Get Startup Basics Steps to Take."

This site is helpful regarding state tax registration http://smallbusiness.chron.com/obtain-georgia-sales-tax-id-online-18835.html.  I am still confused about what the NAICS code is.

Because I live on a military installation, I do not get a city/county license.  I have to get permission to have a home-based business from the proper authorities on post.

This should get you started.  There are many phone numbers available online if you need to call and have a human guide you.  Just start calling around and someone will get you where you need to be.

Good Luck,

Angie (Blue Ruby Cakes)

I love this forum!!! Been reading for a while and have so many questions, I don't know where to start. I have been observing from a afar bc I was kind of scared bc I am still isn't the process of getting my license and want to ask the right questions... I ran into someone today at Aldi's that was buying four butter packages so I asked if she used it to bake and that prompted me to ask her if she used them to bake... She proceeded to tell me she makes shortbread cookies and sells them and her customers haven't complained and wee err in front of people and didn't want to push her into the answering licensing questions. So I went in full force today with my licensing. I am so new at all of this this post dragged me in cause I talked to dept of agriculture and county ordinances and water utilities  today... Overwhelmed ....is putting it lightly
