Making 3-D Cake Characters

I have always used buttercream for cake decorating.  I would love to start making 3-D fondant/gum paste characters for cake decorations.  Is marshmallow fondant the best to use for this or is gum paste better?  Thanks for any advice!  :-)

I would like to know this too... When I was in culinary school they had us use gumpaste but they also said to mix it but at my externship they only used store bought fondant. So I would just like to know the best way

I like marshmallow fondant mixed with a pinch of tylose. I've had the best luck with this and I'm very happy with how it molds and holds up. :-)
