How do you suppose Zoe got this feather effect? Gum paste or wafer paper?

It's so light I'm voting wafer paper.

I know this is an old post, but I'd like to know how to create this effect of the bottom tier.  It seems like the wafer paper is curled slightly.  I tried steaming the wafer paper and letting it dry on a rolling pin, but it dried puckered, not smooth.  Does anyone have experience to share?

just curl it a bit on a dowel or something round

Yes, but I was hoping for instant gratification.  I experimented with regular paper by wrapping it around a dowel and after a day and a half it was barely curled, and it is slowly straightening out.  Maybe if I do it weeks in advance it will hold its shape.

Wafer paper it totally different than plain paper.  It will curl.  If it cracks it is old:(    Very, Very lightly mist a towel and foll those feathers on a dowel, wrap them in the towel and remove.  They should stay slightly curled.  If there is too much moisture the wafer paper will dissolve.

Thanks for the tips.  I got sidetracked with a different cake but will get back to this one, hopefully with some time to find a method that works for me.
