AI'm fairly new to cake decorating and have been challenged to make a construction cake with a specific piece of equipment. I need suggestions on how to make this (the drill bit portion). I tried fondant last night and it kept sagging or cracking. Thanks in advance.

Was it just plain fondant you used?  Try using gumpaste instead, but make sure to support the shape until it dries - probably overnight.

AYou can use the fondant but add Tylose powder to the fondant. You will have less time to work with the fondant but It will dry firm. Hth

I would go with gumpaste and use those weird cucumber ribbon cutters from the early 90s as a mould...I knew they would come in useful for something!

AThanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try to spiral cut it tonight (great idea). I'm just not sure how to set it to dry. Tissue paper?

Depending on how large it needs to be (scale) you may be able to use spiral pasta painted silver.
