AI just started out and I made my first fondant cake with stripes but I could not get them smooth. Any tips?

Hi and welcome!

I add a tiny amount of cornstarch to firm up my fondant, just a little bit, when I make stripes or bands.  That way the bands don't stretch out of shape when I pick them up.

For longer bands, you can roll the fondant around a small plastic rolling pin or tube.  I use the tube ( like a spool) and the fondant doesn't stick to itself.  Then you gently pull the fondant off the spool as you go around the cake.  This just takes practice.

I hope that helps.  Have fun!

You can follow that link to a craftsy class if you want to, but basically, she cuts a piece of baking paper the same height as the cake. Then apply shortening to the paper and roll out your fondant on the paper. Then cut your stripes, apply water to the stripes, then lift the paper up onto the cake. Peel the paper back, and the stripes should have stuck to the cake.
