I get there must be a PVC pipe or some other support going through the centre of the cakes, but i don't understand how the monkey's right leg is suspended in mid air! can somebody explain?

Maybe she made it as a separate piece with a skewer through it, and added it when the leg was dry with the help of chocolate as glue? You would have to support the foot against something til the chocolate hardens though (or use that freeze spray stuff).

AIt would be no big deal to make that leg and foot from fondant or modelling chocolate, with a skewer into the body. You might need to prop the foot with something while it dries and hardens. I did a nearly identical cake recently and drove it 35km not long after it was made and NOTHING fell off. I was amazed....
