I am making Alice in Wonderland inspired cupcake toppers for tomorrow.  The two tallest are the white rabbit (sitting up) and the blue caterpillar (sitting up). They will be going on top of fondant covered cupcakes.  I have a few questions.

Would you put a support through the topper and in to the cupcake?  I generally try to avoid having anything inedible in cupcake toppers, but I expect these to be taller than the cupcake itself is.

will the weight of the topper smoosh the buttercream under the fondant?  I've done tall toppers on discs on top of buttercream, but never fondant covered cupcakes.  I use a crusting buttercream that is half butter and half shortening.

Thank you!!

I would think you need a 'pick' of some kind to stableize it.
