the international cake exploration society has been monikered 'ices' since it was created i guess -- now it is the same sounding name of the really bad guys -- should ices change their name do you think?

Ahmmm the title of the poll was supposed to be the first question -- anyhow everytime we hear the news from Iraq and they say that issis did whatever it just creeps me & my husband out -- so was wondering what you thought

Yep; I'd be changing it; it would creep me out too.

(This is from a person named Bogan - now quite a derogatory word here in Australia. Our extended family have been discussing changing our name for several years but we can't find a name that suits everyone.)

Really, after giving this much thought, they really sound different if pronounced right.

ISIS is exactly as it sounds Is - Is.

ICES is Ice pluralized.

Is and ice sound different.

Haha are you a Bogan? I'm a Root, and you know what that means in Aussie slang! When I got married people asked me if I was sure I really wanted to change my name to that.

But seriously, ISIS is hopefully something that is fleeting and cake is forever.

In my mind they are pronounced slightly differently anyway.

ALynne, yes the spelling is different -- but they are pronounced exactly the same -- gives me a start every time I hear it on the news

No, I don't think they are not pronounced the same. There is a slightly different sound if pronounced correctly. Also it's spelled differently.

Ahave you heard it on the news? it's an emphasized long 'i' sound followed by 'sez' for both of them -- I can't detect the slight difference in the correct way to pronounce -- it sounds just like ices to me & my husband

Well actually I have heard it on the news and at 1st at least it was pronounced IS-IS but I guess some announcers/reporters have gotten sloppy.

I googled this in the hope of getting some clarity. Depending on which authority you check, it seems it is pronounced ee-sis or eye-sis. Great help that was. In any case, apparently they've changed their name to "The Islamic State" or "IS". So, hopefully, in time ISIS will disappear (in more ways than one) and ICES can, once again, claim its rightful place in the world.

ISIS should be be pronounced eye-siss like the Egyptian goddess Isis.

ICES should be pronounced as one would says, "Mary ices the cake'. eye-sezz.

They are an "INTERNATIONAL" organization with members and friends all over the globe dedicated to the love of  "CAKE."   Why should an organization dedicated to world inclusion, sharing, and reaching out to every person on planet earth have to make a change.

They are an established organization, with major brand recognition. In what application could the two be confused or compared?

Changing a name costs a huge amounts of money, not to mention the massive amount of man hours that would go into it, just so terrorists can have full monopoly of it?

Absolutely not.

Athis line of questioning made me remember when I went to an ices convention in Nevada -- the first thing the check-in clerk said to me at the casino/resort was, "are you with ices?" it was significant because I had never heard it pronounced before -- had only seen it in print -- it just creeps me out now

I can't think of anyone associating the two in any context.

Are we done here? I flagged the thread. We're using it as entertainment; but to continue now is ill-mannered and disrespectful of the most recent ISIS/ISIL victim. If you need more information, please read the latest news reports. Don't skip the word "horrific."

Flagged as well. I find even the idea of this thread as offensive.
