How To Make Ballerina Slippers?

AI'm going to be making a cake with ballerina slippers as the topper. I found a pattern to use for the slippers but wanted a fee tips in how to make them. Would it be better to use fondant or gum paste? If I used gum paste, can you use water as a glue like on fondant?

Also, how would you place the slippers to look like they are standing upright on the cake? Would I need to use a wooden cake dowel on the back of the slippers?

Any suggestions would be appreciative!

Thanks! :)

Use gumpaste for sure, fondant is too soft and the shoes will smooth!  You can't use water for the gumpaste because the slippers are formed in such a way they need extra glue, so definitely use gumpaste glue.

I would suggest supporting them upright with a wooden dowel for sure.

Good luck, post pictures when you are done and let me know how it turns out!

AThanks for all the help! Here is the final product!:) the straps gave me a hard time. They broke and I had to piece them together but the party was at my place so I didn't have to travel with the cake! :) I made the shoes out of fondant but might try gum paste next time. It's a red velvet cake on top tier and vanilla on bottom all iced with cream cheese icing.
