Hello everyone, i'm going to do a swimming pool cake in the near future and I am wondering about the piping gel I need to use for the water.

What do I need to consider when I use piping gel? I have never used it before but I am making this cake for a girl who wants a specific cake and that includes piping gel.

Can I make it or do I have to buy it and are there more than one brand, witch do you prefer?

Thanks so much, Brynja

You can make it but it's really cheap and easier to buy.  I haven't used it on fondant, but I have heard that it can melt the fondant.  I only have one brand available to me in town, so I can't help you on that question.  I wouldn't imagine there would be much difference between different brands though.

AYou can Google recipes for it online. I make my own and it turns out very well. I wouldn't put it directly on fondant. I would pipe down some blue buttercream where the pool will be. Then add the piping gel on top and swirl it in. It turns out quite well this way!

I've made a pool cake before and used Wilton piping gel for the water...I tinted it blue with regular gel coloring.

(If you click on my FB link below you can see it, it's right in the cover/header area)

Prior to making the cake I experimented with blue jello using varying amounts of water...ALL of my practice fondant pieces slowly dissolved...

I experimented with blue jelly too for a cake for my sister, what a mess!!! Luckily it was for my family and they all thought it was hilarious that I had made a cake wreck.  I make my own piping gel, it is super easy and you can colour it with gel colours.
