I haven't posted on here in forever, but I was wondering if anyone out there has ever tried covering fruit with fondant.? I was planning out a cake for my 6yr old's birthday (Angry Birds Star Wars), and I had my cake pans turned upside-down with apples placed as models for the characters I was going to make for the top of the cake, just so I could map out the whole thing and get an idea what it would look like. Then it occurred to me that the apples turned upside-down were the same general shape that I needed for my characters, especially the Vader one. Maybe I could cover apples in fondant and decorate them as Angry Birds? I was originally going to make them out of cake or Rice Krispie treats, but I thought maybe this could be a fun and different decoration, sort of like candy apples. I was thinking of using a little corn syrup as he "glue," rather than icing, so that the fondant doesn't slide off of the smooth apple. Hopefully, since they are not very big, there won't be too much weight to the fondant, which might help with keeping it from sliding. Have any of you ever tried anything like this? Can you think of any problems I might run into? Thanks! :-)
That would work, but I'd peel the fondant off and be the party pooper when I made the kids eat the apples!
AThanks costumeczar! I think I will give it a try. I definitely will not be giving anyone an entire fonant covered apple. I think it would take them weeks to get over the sugar high! :-) Probably just apple slices with a lot of the fondant removed.

i would be concerned about the weight of the apples.
AWhen making caramel apples, you dip the apples in boiling water for a second and then rub them with a paper towel to remove the wax coating. That step might help make the fondant stick better.
know what would be cool--a fondant spiral wrapped around & around the apple--just if you could get it to cooperate and not slide--maybe easier said than done--just a thought--but i wanna try it now...
i bet it would stick pretty good to caramel -- i made some of those ooey gooey caramel apples that are thick with chocolate and nuts and all manner of decadence that you slice & eat for christmas--fondant swirlies would firmly take them over the top imo
AThanks for all the ideas! I will definitely make sure I do something to support the apples on the cake, either a dowel stuck in them or dowels under them like they were little cake tiers. I really like the boiling water idea for removing the wax too. I will let you know how it all turns out! :-D
