I tend to make a lot of cakes and many of those are made from sketches or photos of ideas that the person wants on their cake.  I have a lot of Wilton decorating books I get ideas from.  But I have noticed in researching that many of my cakes look so familiar if not almost a copy of many cakes posted or are in the internet. I made a cake straight out of a Wilton book because that is what bride wanted. And I have seen where other bakers have made the same cake.  How do you feel when you see your cake copied ?

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, if someone copied one of my cakes, I'd be thrilled.

It takes time to come up with original designs, give credit to the source and it would be flattering. Without giving credit, to me, it's the same as plagiarizing..I wouldn't feel right about copying some else's work either without their permission or crediting them with the original.

 That's becoming harder and harder these days with sites like Pintrest where everyone and their cousin is pinning the same cakes to their boards.  If it's possible to give credit to the original decorator, great, but

don't beat yourself up over it.

It can be difficult to come up with an original idea.  Just do clean, beautiful work :smile:

Unless there's something so amazingly original that comes up, I don't even worry about it anymore. When ruffle cakes were "new" a couple of years ago, I found a picture of one that I'd done about ten years ago, and another one in a wedding magazine from Alabama from about 15 years ago. When decorators "take inspiration" from architecture and art, that's not being original. If I know the original designer of something I'll put something like "based on a so and so design", but if it's bows and roses and swiss dots I'm not going to credit someone for inventing that, because they didn't invent it. You can't copyright a cake design, so it's more a matter of courtesy to credit someone if you copy their design and it's different enough to be identifiable, if that makes sense.

I think if credit can be given it should.  "tutorial by", " Inspired by", "Original design by", or even acknowledging that this is not one's original design but you didn't know who the artist is, is good cake courtesy.  It is not unusual for the original artist to pop in and say thank you and acknowledge your work.
