Dark colors in buttercream icing are so much fun to make and decorate with.  I love the dark reds, purples, and rich Navy blues.........but only on a cake that you cut and eat with a knife and fork.

I'm never ever putting them on cupcakes again.  The cupcakes I made with deep Halloween purple SMBC icing about drove me up the wall.

 

Eating a cupcake by hand I ended up with Purple blobs everywhere, clothes, counters, cups. very annoying, big mistake. Stains yuck.

and I know, I know.  I have probably made the same messy dabs with white SMBC, but at least it doesn't leave a live altering stain........arghhhhhh.

Who was it that suggested coating a cake with uncolored icing, chilling it, then adding a thin outside layer of colored icing?  I don't remember, but THEY WERE A GENIUS !!!
