Coloring Marshmallow Fondant

I am making 2 small 6 inch cakes for a joint birthday party. One is Sofia the First and the other Doc McStuffins. I need to make decorations for each cake. I've never made or used fondant before, I usually do all buttercream, but was thinking of making marshmallow fondant for the stethoscope and a band aid for doc and a amulet and dress decorations for sofia.


With that being said, they are really small cakes. I can probably use ALL of the fondant from one batch to make the different decorations. I only see that you can color it when it's at the melted marshmallow stage, well I don't want just one color nor do I want to make 6 batches for different colors. Is there any other way to color it after I have kneeded and separated into the amounts I need?

AYou can color it just like regular fondant after it's separated. Make sure to keep the portions you aren't actively using covered in Saran Wrap as it will dry out like regular fondant too. It's just easier to color in the mixer if you are using all one color.

Alright! I guess kneed it in after it's made? I've never even used regular fondant besides the already rolled and colored wilton stuff for accents before.

Color with gel coloring, not food coloring. A little bit goes a long way. Color will get all over your hands and surface. Also keep in mind that the more color you add the stickier the fondant will become.  Add powdered sugar to the fondannt as needed. Put lard on your hands and surface to keep it from sticking. I add some gum paste to keep it from stretching so badly and it will kind of harden and keep its shape.  Once you've worked with fondant you will love it! Sometimes takes practice, but well worth it.

I forgot to mention, I make homemade marshmellow fondant only!  I use vanilla flavoring - don't really like almond.
