My niece wants a wedding cake where the top layer is a 6 inch, but it is like 4 layers high. I've tried to fondant cover one like that once before. It was a fail. The fondant would not smooth out with out a tear on it that tall. I tried doing the top and side separate, but the sides wouldn't stay up tight to the top.

I ended up making the last one a 2 layer instead of 4. I couldn't even get 3 to cover smoothly.

Is there a  trick to it that I don't know?

I can tell you MINE was not that smooth. It's going to take practice. I guarantee hers wasn't that smooth the first time either.
