...  I know WHAT I need to do, but I'm having a bl**dy nightmare trying to do it.


Got a huge 3D wine bottle cake to cover.


It's been made using five 5" round cakes, each torted into 3 layers (so 2 layers of buttercream) and stacked.  Each cake is on its own cake board and has a couple of plastic dowels for support, plus there's a central wooden dowel.  I've used Rice Krispie treats for the 'shoulders' of the bottle and the neck is cardboard tubing covering in cling film (Saran).


It's 22" from the base of the cake to the bottom of the neck.  And 17" in diameter.


But so far, so good.




I know it's a two person job - fortunately my husband is off work today so is able to give me a hand.


I was also told not to try and lift the sugarpaste, as it will just rip and tear.  So I've rolled it around my long rolling pin and tried to apply it that way. 


But it's just not working.


Cake is for Sunday.  Fortunately, it's a gift for a family member, so if I have to change to a 'plan B' that's no problem.

Are you "covering"....or "wrapping".   When I have a tall object, I wrap.   It can be done with one person...though 2 would be ideal and won't tear.

i'm sure you have it well frozen--could you lay the fondant on the table and roll the bottle over the fondant--? probably not ;)


--sounds so heavy!


i'd use candy clay--chocolate clay--so much more forgiving--patches disappear with the heat of your hand


that's a mighty big bottle

AI'm trying to wrap the cake (no, it's not frozen... )

But even if I did take all the drawers out the freezer, it wouldn't make a difference as the central dowel is glued into a much bigger board!!!!

It's just handling the sugar paste that's causing problems.

Will try again when hubby gets back from taking son to tutor.

AHave you got a big sheet of vinyl or something? My mother in law bought me some ready rolled marzipan because it was cheap. It was dry as anything and I ended up throwing it away but the plastic food sheeting that it was rolled with was awesome, nothing stuck to it. You could roll your fondant out on it, lift it on the sheet and attach it then peel the plastic off like sticky back plastic!

Which I then spackle with a little RI, by running a line of RI down the line and using a wet finger to fill in. Then I paint it. Seems to work for me. Good luck !!!!!!! Pictures when it is done!

I already said to my husband that this might be the way to go.

I will definitely post pics if I pull this off and don't have to revert to plan b (gum paste wine bottle in a crate!!

AI would also do it in two pieces. Do you think your customers are going to care if there is a seam?

Cake is covered (wrapped) - in two pieces!


After our third attempt to do it with one piece, I gave up.  This cake is just too big for that!


One of the side seams is perfectly straight...  the other does go slightly askew.  :-(:cry::oops:


I'm finishing it off tomorrow, then will post pics....

Woo-hoo!!!!! :D


Now that the cake has been painted with glaze and colouring, you hardly notice the wonky join on one side!!!!!


It's had two coats and needs at least 1 more.  The first coat of glaze had black powder and claret paste.


The second coat just had a bit of claret.


The next coat will just be clear.  I'm getting short of glaze, though, so I hope it's enough!!!!

I love it...  no light here any more, so I'll take a photo in the morning.


In all honesty, I didn't think through the proportions and it IS too tall...  transporting it will be horrendous.  Hubby is driving to the restaurant and I'll have it on my lap so that I can steady it if needs be (will wear food hygiene gloves!!)  It stands at a smidge over 2 foot tall (about 25" or 63cm)  and I used 5" cakes (which have a decent layer of ganache on the outside and then fondant).  So it's very tall and thin and gravity won't be my friend tomorrow!!!


Please pray for a smooth journey there.

So, it's 7am and I've been up for a good while.  I just can't stop worrying about transporting it. 


What if it's too tall to get onto my lap in the car???  My husband has an estate car (I think that's a station wagon in the US?) so there's plenty of room at the back...  but I can't sit there with it.  Apart from the fact it's illegal to travel like that and apart from the fact I'd arrive at the party looking a state - my back just wouldn't be up to it!  It's a 40 minute drive.  And I can't just put it there without someone to be there with it because there's no way it would survive the journey!  No way. 


So I'm up at silly o'clock on a Sunday morning...  off to do MORE tidying of the kitchen.

I SWEAR, I am practically hyperventilating.  I have NO idea if it's going to make it in one piece, but just in case, here's the 'before' shot! :wink:


And a normal sized bottle of wine next to it, for scale!


We're leaving in 15 minutes and I'm sweating like a proverbial....

AI glanced at your cake again and the watermark caught my eye because it looks like it says "Cake panties" and I laughed out loud. :lol:
