Sorry, but I never did understand all the hype surrounding it - I don't have a problem rolling out fondant and getting it onto a cake.  I'd rather invest in a good rolling pin.

BUT - then again, my comments are speaking from somebody who

a)  Didn't have a need to buy one

b)  Somebody who hasn't used it

I hear lots of reports about it - more than half experience similar problems to you, with the added problem that it is bloody hard to roll out.  Others swear by it ... saying it is the BEST thing ever.

I don't know whether the people that love it - don't notice all the little 'pock' marks on it .... OR whether they use it differently??

AWhat fondant are you using?

I use fondarific & it doesn't work well in the mat...sticks & has tiny jokes.

It works best with Fondx & MMF type fondants.

Has tiny jokes? As opposed to big jokes? Are they really funny or not so much?

I'd guess that part of your issues may be having washed it.  Once you get is conditioned with a bit of shortening, there's no need to "wash" it--you just need to wipe it off with a clean cloth.

Have you read the info over on the sweetwise.com FAQs? http://www.themat.com.au/faq/

and/or watched all of the youtube videos about using it?

I only roll out on a single piece of The Mat. I wipe it with a bit of shortening, wipe that off, and that's it.

Don't wash it. Ever. The more you use it the better it will work.
