I've attached 2 pictures of a gumpaste flower bouquet I'm working on as a cake topper. Its on a cake dummy that will be the same as the real cake, except the top tier will be 6" high (all the dummy tiers are 4" high.) I just need opinions on what anyone thinks because this is my first time making gumpaste flowers, and while that did come easy to me, putting together an arrangement of flowers does not!!! Maybe I'm over thinking it and have been working too long on these flowers. Should I add leaves? or what are some other really small filler flowers that I can add? The flowers here are poppies, roses and hydrangeas. Thanks in advance!

Hi, I don't know if this will help....I think it looks wonderful just as is but would the customer mind if you added

a little ribbon if you have spots where you can see the dummy cake....Not big bows but those little ones where you just wrap the ribbon around your hand and make loops then wire and spread them apart....Just an idea

Thank you! The good thing is, is that I can really do whatever I want, as long as the colors match the theme, because it's for my sisters engagement party that I'm making for free. The flowers are attached to a styrofoam half ball that I'm going to cover in fondant ( this is just for practice to get an idea what I want to do.) But the ribbon does sound like a good idea! I was planning on making a black border around the cake tiers so maybe black ribbon?

The ribbon idea sounds pretty and not hard to do.  If you wanted to add gum paste leaves you might consider making Ivy.  Easy, tons of color variation and sizes.

Ribbon and/or ivy would be pretty, but I personally think it looks fine just as it is.

Thank you! I feel a little better about it now. I'll try making ivy and other leaves to see how it'll look together. The hydrangeas are so frustrating sticking in small spots because they're very fragile, I already broke some petals off.

You know you don't have to put all your ivy on wires.  You can just use a little royal icing where you can't see it as a glue and just place the ivy where you want it.  Just make sure they're not too heavy.

I haven't thought about that, will they stick out enough?

Don't shoot the messenger, but I really think it's entirely too big.  The flowers themselves are excellent, though.  The point of a topper is to visually complete the lines of the cake, creating a pyramid shape.  The topper should be a smaller diameter than the top tier.

I agree with Leah, that was my first impression, it was too big, Big is not alway better, Take it apart and try a smaller version of it.  I think you will like it better.,

AUnless you do something to create balance at the bottom, I too think it's a bit too large. But what gorgeous flowers!

I kinda thought it was too big too, but how do I make it smaller? Can I still use the same flowers? Should I use a smaller styrofoam base that way less flowers are needed to cover it?  The base that the flowers are on is 4" in diameter.  I do plan on putting  a few flowers on the sides, but not that many where it would balance it out I guess. And I'm very new at this so any constructive criticism is appreciated! icon_smile.gif

You don't need a styro base for the flowers.  Just gather them into your hand like you do real flowers when making a bouquet.  And wrap the stems in floral tape.  Place a wide straw into the center of the cake and drop the wrapped stem bundle into the straw.

 

Of course, make sure the bundle will go into the straw before trying it on the actual cake.

I already cut the stems pretty short to go in the styrofoam.  Will attaching a longer wire to them with floral tape make them sturdy enough without bending?

This is the finished cake. I made the topper a little smaller and is still attached to a half styro ball covered in fondant.
