For all you people who can't seem to get your head around people paying TOP DOLLAR for something special - something that not everybody can afford - something that a lot of people perhaps don't see the value in......
BUT - 6 people in one day did ! and because it is now being touted as one of Australia's most expensive cupcakes - people WILL buy it - just to say they did! - they probably won't buy a dozen - they might not even come back to buy a 2nd one - but there IS a market for these - AT $45 PER CUPCAKE !

AYum, sounds absolutely delicious. And in a place of only 90,000 people. Not even a capital city. WOW!
AThis reminds me of the $300 hamburger sold by a restaurant in NYC, they donated the profits to charity.

The burger, invented in honor of National Hamburger Month (otherwise known as May), features a patty of Japanese Waygu beef infused with 10-herb white truffle butter and seasoned with Salish Alderwood smoked Pacific sea salt. It's topped with cheddar cheese, hand-made and cave-aged for 18 months by famed cheesemaker James Montgomery of Somerset, England. There are also shaved black truffles, a fried quail egg, a blini, creme fraiche, Kaluga caviar and a white truffle-buttered Campagna roll. The final touch? Wait for it -- a solid gold "Fleur de Lis" toothpick, encrusted with diamonds, designed by world-renowned jeweler Euphoria New York. Seriously.

Wha's a 'single-origin' mudcake?
I live pretty near this shop. If everyone sends me some cash, I'll order one and let you all know what a $45 cupcake tastes like! Anyone?

I am assuming they mean they use single origin chocolate, which simply means it's made from beans all from the same region and/or farm.
Single origin refers to the chocolate used, it means all the beans came from the same region. Chocolate taste varies from one area to the other, sometimes even from a plantation to the next. That's why there's some extremely limited types that are really expensive out there.

Hahaha I don't think you are going to get any takers but nice try
Wow and they admit to this "and charge an obscene amount for it"
There is a $1000 ice cream sundae being sold in Manhattan. Seriously, though, $45.00 for a cupcake? Unless it's the size of a 6" cake I can't imagine buying it.
That is totally the kind of thing someone like my husband would buy. It's not 'break the bank' expensive, and it's unique. He has a terrible time coming up with stuff to buy, especially or me, he'd be all over this if we were nearby!
I totally get people buying it for anniversaries and such.

Uhhhh I'm not sure there are too many people on this site who can't get their head around paying TOP DOLLAR for something special... and for anyone who wants to argue with me I suggest you go check your cake supplies and then let me know how that worked out for you ;)~
I think if anything it's everyone's customers who complain about paying a reasonable dollar for difficult and time consuming work! :)
