With ICES and Cake Camp just around the corner, I'm wondering what's the best way to transport display cakes.  My first ICES was last year and I was floored by some of the extravagant detail and string work on cakes.  How the heck do you get those on a plane and to travel without damaging them?  I'd like to take a display cake with me to Vegas next week and I'm strategizing the size and design based on carry-on vs. checked.  Thank you!

I've never taken a cake on a plane, but I know Ruth Rickey wrote an excellent blog post on transporting show cakes.

You can fly with a cake.  Just check the size of the airline overhead bin.

I do it all of the time on Southwest and I find that a box 10" high fits fine.  Width can be up to 14"; length up to 24".

If you go larger, it needs to go as checked luggage--good luck.

I once bought a seat for a cake (on a $39 flight).

Good stuff.  Thanks!  I'll keep it to a 2-tier to fit in that 10" box.
