Hi everyone! This question is purely a preference question, or maybe more of an inquiry as to your own preference.
When you are looking at tier sizes do you most prefer a 2" space or a 4" space with tier sizes? So for example a 14 12 10 or do you prefer a 4" difference? Like a  14 10 6 ? These are just examples, is there an rule or code to this? I understand that the servings that are needed for the cake will somewhat dictate the tier sizes, and I know that it does effect the decorating space between the tiers and the edges of the cake for placing flowers and such. Just curious what your personal rule of thumb or preference is when choosing tier sizes.
When given creative freedom I make mine with 2 inch graduated tiers.
I have had designs brought to me with more and less but my preference is 2 inch.
For myself I like the 2" spacing but I do kind of like the 4" as well just have never made one.
I suppose there's a code, of two. I prefer 3, but I do a lot of taller cakes when I can get away with it. For instance, if someone needs a cake for about 100 people, it can "be done" in a 6-9-12, but I prefer a 5-7-9-11. I do lots of tall and towery designs too, like these, with a 1" difference. It doesn't work for every cake, but it can look really elegant. It's a neat solution for smaller serving cakes too, because you can work with a smaller base tier, and take advantage of the pretty pedestals that bigger cakes just don't fit on.Â
AI personally prefer 3"
I prefer 2".
AAZCouture, is each tier 3 layers torted and filled? What's the end height of each of your layers? Your cakes are gorgeous!
No, they're two layers, filled in the middle. I bake above the rim though with parchment collars and get a minimum height of 4.5 to 5". Thanks!Â
My personal preference is 2" but I also like the tall, skinny look of 1".
Regardless of the difference, my borderline OCD demands that each tier have the same amount of space. SO, a 10", 7", 4" or 10", 8", 6" or 9", 8", 7", 6" (I'm doing one of those in 2 weeks) but NEVER 12", 10", 6" or 10", 7", 6".
not trying to to hijack here but howsweet how did you do the writing on that yellow cake?
I prefer 3" and then 4". I don't personally like how 2" looks. BUT the ones in the pictures are stunning! Maybe it's because they are taller tiers?
What are the sizes of tiers?
AI like 4"
