Hi there,
I am doing a cake this weekend and I am wondering if anyone has any tips on piping smooth thick lines up and around a round cake. I am thinking of marking the lines on the side of the cake first, but does anyone else have any other ideas on making this easier or very accurately done?

Are you doing this cake you have pictured?  Because you can only get this exact effect using fondant drapes.  If you are just trying to achieve something similar, then check out the tutorial on here by Edna De La Cruz about smoothing piped buttercream designs.  And yes, you can mark-off long lines as a guide when piping lines on a cake. (use a toothpick and make small marks that will be covered with your piping.  HTH  :-)
