My niece mailed me a rhinestone brooch that she wants on her cake, along with ribbon.  It is an actual brooch with the pin on the back of it.  How in the world do I put that on her cake without it falling off??  Can I put a wooden skewer behind it, through the space between the closed pin and the brooch, to anchor it?  It seems like it will fall from the weight if I don't do something to hold it in place.   Anyone ever done this?

AI saw an episode of cake boss just recently, where a social heiress wanted real diamonds and jewels attached to a tiered cake. I can only imagine how heavy these would have been but he glued them on with a nice amount of royal icing HTH : )

Thanks for your reply; I would have never thought of using royal icing!

Instead of a wooden skewer, maybe wire that you can twist around the closed pin with one end and into the cake with the other would work so you can manipulate it a little more?

I have used a broach a couple of times on cakes. On mine the broach pin was stuck directly into the gumpaste center of the bow. Below is my most recent one.

Wow, that is a beautiful cake!

I will need to experiment a bit; getting some great suggestions on here.  Thanks everyone!

I did one similar to this, and just pushed the brooch into the gumpaste while it was soft with the pin closed. That was plenty to hold it there. Royal icing would give you some extra peace of mind.
