Hi there
How high is an extended tier? I am making a 10 inch cake that is 6 inches high and want to know if i need to put a board between the tiers? It will be ganached and covered in fondant as a single tier.
Is there a rule as to when you put a board in between the tiers?
I am a bit confused, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Cheryl
AI always try not to use a board, since I hate to have a standard sized cake and a glorified sheet cake, but the bottom layer always squooshes and my fondant will rumple at the base if the cake. Also, my standard height is always 4.5+, so my 6" is more like 7", and most bakers on here will recommend supports for every 4" of cake. (Of course it squooshes, lol) but what I do to combat the weirdness of having support in the cake, is to do it as 3" and 3" instead of 4" and 2". But I torte my layers to get there, and have 3, 1" layers per.
Hope that makes sense!! I am only in my first cup of coffee!
Anna--that is a great idea!! I don't think I ever would have thought of that. I will have to file that away for a future reference!
And only on one cup of coffee--quite impressive! What happens when you have two or three lol.
Thanks for the great information.

I am so glad I could help someone!
I like to think I am a little more "fluid of thought" and a bit more understandable once I have a bit more coffee ;-) Unfortunately, the coffee I drank was from last night, and it is gone, but there wasn't enough there to make me feel like washing the pot, so I have switched to mocha cappuccino from a powder, lol.
I am not a morning person, I drag around all morning, I don't wake up until dinner time, then I can work half the night, I have to force myself to have a decent schedule with the kids in school, so it is melatonin at night, and coffee in the morning, with the occasional 5 hour energy drink. But it tastes nasty!
If left to my own devices, I would be up until 4 am, sleep until 11am, and be just fine, but as it is now, I have to get up at 7:30, so I go to bed at midnight and lay there until 3 am, then finally sleep until 7:30 and drag around for 10 hours before I wake up, haha. Not funny.
Thanks everyone
So I just put a board if i want the cake to be higher than 4 inches.
That makes sense. .. Thanks heaps :)
I usually make a 6 inch cake about 4 inches tall.
