I will be attempting to make a pirate ship cake. Was wondering if there is anyone that has made one and can offer any tips. Maybe share a sturdy white cake recipe for carving.
I'd go for a madeira cake with a strong filling like traditional BC or Ganache; if you stack and fill your layers in a rough shape first then chill in the fridge over night you'll be able to carve the final shape more easily.
For the mast I'd use dowels and wrap the 'above deck' part in a thin strip of fondant; you can attach it really easily with a tiny bit if melted chocolate (too much and it splurges out at the seam!) let it dry a day or two before handling though and it'll stay nice an neat :-)
thats all I can think of right now! HTH
Thanks Crazy-Gray. I've never tired a madeira cake. not even sure what that is. I'll have to try one out.
AOoh it's really easy :-) it's pound cake (equal weights of butter sugar self raising flour and eggs and a little vanilla) plus a half measure of plain flour so for an 8inch square 3 layer I do 14oz of everything plus 7oz plain :-)
Hope that makes sense! Have fun :-)
Sounds good. Im going to give it a try.
Thanks for the help!
