Larger Cake Than Oven Will Fit

I am needing to make a 20 inch square cake, but my oven will only fit a 16 inch pan.  Is it possible to make a 16 in and then make a smaller cake and cut the extra 4 inches in strips of the smaller cake to make the 20 inches I need?

AIt might be easier to make four 11" square cakes instead.
