If you want it to be cake (rather than Rice Krispie treats or styrofoam), have you thought about baking the batter in a can?
Or you could make a swiss roll? That would have reasonable structural integrity, although it may take a bit of practice to get it completely round.
Or you could cut rounds and sandwhich them together with filling.
That’s what I'd do; and use a tough filling like ganache and a thick crumb coat too so your fondant doesn’t compress the cylinder too much.
For mine I just carved at a madeira cake until it was right but I wish I'd done above!!
