Icing Gets Tacky As Soon As I Start Smoothing It!

I'm still taking the Wilton classes and tonight is my last class for course 1.  We're supposed to take in a cake already iced and smoothed out.  I'm using the Wilton "buttercream" recipe for chocolate buttercream (I know I know but we actually like the wilton recipe).  I crumb coated it let it crust over and dry then I iced it and let it set overnight in the fridge to crust.  I've been trying to smooth it all day now.  As soon as I put the parchment paper on it and start smoothing the crust goes away and it sticks to the paper making a huge mess.

Is there anyway to fix this without having to scrape off the icing and redo it?  I only have a couple hours until I have to leave for class.

I took those classes. I don't remember putting mine in the fridge. It sounds like you have too much moisture- it might be too cold in the fridge and then much warmer in the kitchen. Let it warm up and try to smooth it out with a knife instead of parchment paper. If you have one of those plastic triangle thingies (lol, I'm drawing a blank) use that if it doesn't have to be smooth.

Never thought of the too much moisture I simply put it in the fridge because of the custard filling since I filled it last night I didn't want it to get soggy lol.  I'll  try smoothing it again when I get to class after it's had time to warm up.  If all else fails I do have the design triangle so I can use that
