Hello! Mother's day is coming up and I'd like to make my mom a cake. I have it sketched out and I have a general idea of what I WANT to do, however, I don't really know if I CAN do it. You see, I've never made a cake like this before--the 'fanciest' I've gotten was a buttercream rose.
What I have in mind is an "Earth Angel" (greens, yellows, browns, those types of things) standing and folding her hands in prayer, surrounded by flowers and with a lattice above her. I think I have a good idea of how to make it, but I'm really stuck on the wings. I'd like them to be somewhat thin and shimmery, like pearl. My first thought was sugar glass, but I wouldn't know how to shape it without a mold. What could I use to make them so that they are not big and clunky, but more pearlescent and graceful?
There are lots of angel wing molds out there.
You could use gelatin to make them light and translucent.
Search for "how to make gelatin butterflies"; it's the same technique.
I was thinking of using gelatin, I just wasn't sure whether the wings would stay up without folding over. Thanks!
