Hello, I'm making a cake for my bf's 21st birthday and I want to use rice krispies to use as the figure to go on top of the cake. I have a dragon, pikichu, link (from legend of zelda), mountains, and a few other figures. My question is how far in advance can I make the rice krispie figures before the party, can I use them to make smaller figures, and how should I store them with and without fondant on top????
Any additional advice on fondant, storage, and good tasting fondant recipies are also welcome since this will be only the second time I've used fondant (and the first time it didn't turn out too well (I used a marshmallow fondant recipie))
Hi, welcome to CC. RKT (rice krispie treat) will keep for a long time. The older it gets the harder it gets, that's why its always recommended that you make your figures in advance.
I store mine in covered containers with and without fondant. But only once they have completely dried. I usually only use this for larger or heavier items to put on a cake. Small items like about 3-4 inches max I make in gumpaste.
As far as taste is concerned, I recommend you try different ones. I personally love the MMF but we all have different taste. Also for covering figures and making embellishments I use a 50/50 mix with gumpaste. Things like flowers that I use tylose in the fondant to make it stronger.

Ok, about how far in advance do you make your's? I've read the max days that I should so is 3 days or the RKT will get stale? I've also read that you should store fondant in a caboard box not an airtight container (and I know that I can make weeks ahead of time) and I've gotten mixed answers on whether to store them in an fridge or not. Can you shead some light for me?
I make my rkt figures a week in advance when possible but never less than 24hrs. I coat mine with chocoate which acts as a barrier and keeps it from getting stale. I do not place any finished ones in an airtight container because they will not dry.
Fondant and/or gumpaste that you need to keep for future work MUST be kept in an airtight container or it will dry out, form a hard crust and if you try to work it will have little balls from the hard crust.
I put a coating of shortening on the fondant/gumpaste, then wrap it in plastic wrap, then place in a ziploc bag, then in my storage container. Keeps for about a month. We make big batches every other week or so and just store to keep for future use.
