I am new here, not to cake decorating :)
I am making a skylander cake for my son this weekend, and I was wondering if you guys had any tips or recommendations on how to make the "brick" effect on the fondant, I am making the "arena" for the skylanders in a dark grey color but I am not sure how to create the brick effect, here is a photo of a similar cake.
Any tips will be greatly appreciated!
Hey There! The easiest way to create a brick effect on fondant I think it to use a fondant mold! All you do is place the mold on top of the fondant and press down. Or you can do it the opposite way and roll the fondant out ontop of the mold. If you don't know what a fondant mold is here are some examples :) Hope this helps!
This one is from Duffs line, he makes some pretty awesome stonework ones
Sorry I'm not good at linking stuff to websites that kinda worked haha, but that should give you an idea.
the cake I did I just added fondant on a bit thick...and then made indents where I wanted the bricks to be, kind of molding it I guess..and then painted them to make it abit shaded.
That looks awesome, thanks for the tips.
Should I use go ahead and make the fondant grey and then paint some black to it?
yes I made it grey then just painted darker parts with black gel mixed with lemon extract
...I covered the cake, with the fondant a little thicker, and then scrunched up some greaseproof paper and dabbed it on the sides to make the brick effect, That was all i had at the time, but I was quite pleased how it come out :)
It's amazing how creative we can be with what's to hand....I am slowly buying more 'proper' equipment...the husband cringes when he starts to read the cc bill!!! The cake looks great, even though I know nothing of the Skylanders!!! Well done
Thanks! ....haha........ yeh my husband cringes when that bill comes in, AND the ebay notifications :)
