AI want to get a stand mixer as I've been making cakes for two years with a hand mixer but I don't have enough money for a top of he range one, equally I want to spend enough that it really lasts so I've been looking at the kenwood kmix which is available for £290 and the kenwood chef which is a bit more. I have looked at kitchen aids but in the uk they are just too much at £420.
The kmix looks the best and is the best price but does anyone know if it would be as good as the chef? The power is a lot less, 500w instead if 1000w but then I noticed kites aids are just 350w ? I bake 3-5 times a month. Mainly madiea and fruit cakes but I'd like to start making bread to.
If you won't be using your mixer every day it doesn't really matter which one you go for - either will do. I personally wouldn't have anything other than a Chef or Major, but I'm a no-nonsense, do-the-job kind of girl - looks aren't highest priority for me. You can get a Kenwood Chef starting at around £160 for a basic model, not fancy stainless steel or anything, you'll pay a lot more for the titanium models.
Motor size is only one factor to consider in a mixer, my Kenwood Major has an 800 watt motor but has all-metal gears as it's the professional one - there are others ones out there with 1100 watt motors but they aren't considered 'professional' or heavy-duty due to the gearing system. I also have an old Chef with a 400 watt motor - it's probably the best mixer I've ever used. It worked for 15 years before the switch broke, hubby has now replaced it and the machine is as good as ever.
If you want to make bread I would suggest the Kenwood Chef with the larger motor. Mixing bread is heavy duty work. Mixing large batches of modelling paste can also be tough on the motor. I love Kenwood Chefs and am on my second one. The first one lasted 23 years and did a lot of work in that time.
AI've never made my own paste but only as I've never had a mixer, so actually tts a good point! Thanks.
I've gone for a Kenwood Major in the end as i found one on offer for £299 and its the Premier model for 1200w. Its not arrived yet and i'm a little nervous about how it will look on the kitchen side but it seemed such a good price and i was worried the kmix would struggle at 500w.
Hope i've made the right choice.
