Thanks for the critiques I am learning so much from this thread and will continue to post as I go. Its really awesome and some of the cakes really do belong in a museum like K8Memphis said. I also loved her levels 1-4 really made me laugh.
I just realized the date once I got to about page 10 so then I just caught up to where we were. lol.
ASmitty, that's is what I tried to do with egg cartons and foil. I guess it didn't work lol.
AHi everyone I've been following this thread but never had the nerve to post a picture to be critiqued. But I finished this cake this weekend and would love some feedback and tips. I cut out the letters with Wilton letter cutters but it was a lot more difficult then I thought to keep them the same shape and thickness because I had to poke some of them out. The leopard prints were handpainted and that was the first time doing that. I also made a black rose on top but you can't see it properly in the picture, there's another picture in the photo set that shows the red bow I made which I'm really proud of but I'm sure it could be better. . I will try to start taking better pictures with better backdrops. I know there's lots I can fix and change but I really appreciate what all of you have to say as well. Thanks!!

Hi, I know you will all be looking for some down time after a summer weekend, but if any of you have the time to critique my cake I would very much appreciate it. I am a hobby baker but I have learnt so much from this forum that I really appreciate the expertise which is shared and am looking to improve even more.
I know it is very lopsided on the board - if anyone has any hints on how to centre cakes properly then I would be very grateful to know. Anything else?
Thanks!
A@JWinslow thanks for the comment and great advice. I attached the tails of the bow to the cake board so I probably should have attached them to my cake or made a smaller bow. And thanks for the tip on freezing the letters, I will try that.
A@Elcee thank you for the kind words and great tips. I definitely needed to set my letters up first I realized too late that they weren't as centre as they should be. Ay tips on how to fix that after the fact because removing them would have left a little indent and stain from the fondant. Thanks again!
AI will get back on and look when my Internet is back up its been out due to weather.
AThank you delicious dessert for your comment (I don't know if I should reply here or the photo?). Thankyou for the tip on the extra butter cream around the border! Definitely will come in handy. It was my first time stacking a cake by myself and I had cut the dowels for the top tier too long because I misjudged it and I didn't have time to fix it. So I tried to make my pearls a little larger to compensate but it was hard to make them not look wonky (at least in my skill set lol, I'm sure others can do it).
I'd love if you'd review mine :) Here's the link: http://cakecentral.com/g/a/3377556/birthday-cakes-ive-done-for-my-children-made-with-love-3-3-3-lots-of-frosting-d/
(hope I did it right)
AThank you elcee. I love pearl borders, I think the one on the cake was a bit large for my tastes lol. This is addictive.

I am definitely feeling the love in your cakes! They make me smile. My suggestion would be to try out a variety of frosting tips to see which give you the affect that you are going for. For straight lines you can make a line in the frosting with a tooth pick before you pipe to help give it a straighter appearance. And I like to chill my cakes before I decorate them to give myself a hard surface that is easier to work on. (Sorry I can't figure out how to comment on a photo from my phone). Keep it up!
Thank you so much! I honestly would love to take a class or two when I get a chance. Those cakes are the ONLY cakes I've done, but I love getting advice and I've never thought about using a toothpick to be honest! Thank you! I def. chill my cakes as well and do a crumb coat to seal in crumbs before the actual frosting job..I do a lot of youtube searching and just practice when I can, which really isn't often considering these are the only "decorated" cakes I've done :p They're usually thrown together, but I've gotten lucky :p. Thank you for your kind words again, I really, really appreciate the pointers! Hope you have a wonderful evening!
ADelicious desserts thank you very much!
HappyMom you obviously have a passion for decorating and your kids are very lucky!!! Just keep practicing and you'll find your style. I'm no critique I'm still pretty new but YouTube has definitely helped me as well. There are quite a few helpful tutorials on there as well as on here CC.

Thank you so much! I am definitely going to look up classes when I can, but right now I have 3 kiddos and I'm a full time college student (nice thing is though, I'm home when they're home) Plus my schedule is slightly easier than last semester. The cakes I've posted are the only ones I've done in my life, I actually am terrible with drawing or painting...but love to see my creations come to life when it comes to cake. Thank you for your kind words! I hope you have a wonderful day!
Kaylawaylalya- sp? Ok I critiqued your last cake with shells.
As for the purple flowers on the other cake with the new picture I can see clearer now.
So I think this issue your right wasn't how they dried. I think it has more to do with placement.
I think you were going for an organic look but it ended up with lots of spacing between flowers and
then some are lower or higher on the tiers. I know you said you miss calculated on the second tier and
used bottom tier flowers but I like that tier the best. So maybe just more flowers and closer together?
Once you posted the new pic I could tell you did great on the flowers. What a difference a picture makes it always amazes me. Now if only I could wrangle that sun when I need him. lol
ASmittyditty thankyou for your comments I agree, I wish I could have managed more flowers.
Thanks for all your comments. It is wonderful to have so many helpful and knowledgeable people around.

Ok here is my first painted floral cake. I know its not even on the sides. I had to trim this one and think I got a little wacky on the bottom. Although the ganache underneath looked smooth and even??? Anyhow tell me what I need to do better next time. I wish I had recorded my wilton instructors every words now..lol
AThanks Kayla that's very sweet of you. Elcee-you read my mind I had no idea what to do in the Blank spots. Ill use your idea next time. Thanks for the kind words too.
OK, I've gotten somewhat behind and had lots of pages to catch up on. This is such a fun thread to see everyone's work and to hear comments that don't just come from family. Here is one of my recent family cakes, made for my sister's granddaughter. My sister was terribly disappointed when I described what I was making, as she pictured my using my typical gumpaste flowers. Over the phone she told me she was going to go out and buy some fake flowers to put on it herself when I refused to modify my design. When told that would be the last cake from me if she dared, she relented. As it was, she just hadn't shared my vision and when she saw the cake she told me it was her absolute favorite. (Ah yes, the things one shouldn't tell a baker----that you might modify her design. But that's another thread on here!)

And here is one for her other granddaughter. The theme of the party was ladybugs. Even the birthday girl's dress was covered with ladybugs. I made fondant flowers that matched the ones on her dress, but search as long as I could, I couldn't find a ladybug stamp for the cakeboard. So I cut circles from red duct tape and black marker to place on the board. The cake, itself, was separated from the board by thin foamcore. The cake was red velvet and pretty dry, but the creamcheese filling and dark chocolate ganache made it a little more palatable. I'm still searching for a good RV recipe, having already tried several I've found on here. I really don't understand the love of red velvet.
