Guys,

This is my first fondant cake, and I'm super nervous posting this. I am not terribly proud of it in some ways, but proud in others. I learned a lot while making this cake as a gift for my mom. I am putting myself out there by posting this picture because I feel like we're a community and people often share their work when they just begin.

I made several key mistakes with this cake as you can see, haha. But like I said, I have learned a few things. icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for viewing.

So you have a couple minor little wee details to iron out. Lemme tell you this, in all honesty. Better than 90% of what you'll see round my parts from people who have been doing it for YEARS! Mine wasn't even as close to looking this good on my first second, or probably 4th attempt.

Your welcome ibeeflower, I think my problem is that I roll the fondant too thin, it always cracks and tears, terrified of fondanticon_surprised.gif!

Same here! I still make a mess sometimes. And I didn't start working with fondant until about 4-5 years ago.  I've worked with buttercream for 25 years, and didn't get good until 18 years in. lol! It is amazing what the internet can teach you!)

It looks amazing, I've done probably 6 or 7 fondant cakes now and they don't look this good.

scrumdiddlycakes Posted 22 Feb 2013 , 6:51am

I think you did awesome, I love the over sized bow on top :) You can definitely out-decorate most of the bakeries in my town, lol.

ibeeflower Posted 22 Feb 2013 , 2:07pm

Thank you for your kinds words :) I have learned a lot from Cake Central thanks to all the members.

Scrumddidlycakes: Really, the big bow? I thought it was too big, lol. I failed to measure the bow compared to the cake size. But thank you!

AIt looks fantastic! I made my first fondant cake earlier this week :)

Goreti Posted 22 Feb 2013 , 2:39pm

It is adorable!  I think you did a wonderful job.  I'm still struggling with fondant myself and some of mine don't come out as nice as yours!

SISA Posted 22 Feb 2013 , 2:40pm

I think you did a great job.  It looks much better then my first fondant covered cake and I took a class to help me out!  Remember we are our harshest critics!  The majority of people will look at this cake and seen absolutely nothing wrong with it.  So be proud of your great work!

Definitely! It gives it a sort of whimsical look, bows can be pretty generic looking, but yours is really fun, while keeping it simple.

Thanks for all that looked and commented. I really appreciate your feedback!

That is adorable..i love it.. I am still learning with fondant myself and I have to say you did an amzing job..thank you for posting this pic

dawnybird Posted 22 Feb 2013 , 6:05pm

I think your cake is very pretty, especially for a first one! Wow! I've been decorating cakes for a little over a year now and still can't achieve perfectly smooth butter cream. (not even close!). But since no one in my area ever wants a fondant cake, I've had very little practice and I struggle with it a lot. I always have pleats that I can't smooth out! You'll notice I don't have any cakes in my gallery because I don't want to share them until I think they measure up to the quality I see on here. Good for you being willing to post your early efforts!!

Cupcakegirl2005 Posted 25 Feb 2013 , 2:48pm

Newstead Posted 25 Feb 2013 , 6:35pm

That is absolutely lovely - what a beautiful bow, so different from what you usually see! Lovely draping on the ribbons as well.

ibeeflower Posted 25 Feb 2013 , 6:39pm

Thanks again everyone! Your comments made me smile and get a little more confidence. I hope to post another cake soon!
