Hi I'm new here and joined since I'm having a very hard time finding anything online to help me.
I'm wanting to make a turntable cake (nothing fancy no spinning anything) but I'm a little lost on some stuff.
Will a normal 13x9 pan work since I don't need to make it to feed too many people?
For the turntable part do I use a round cake pan and slice the round cake in half or make 2 separate round cakes?
I need to cover the cake in black fondant right?
Then finally the details like the knobs/buttons is it best to make those out of fondant or gum paste?

You can do this with a 13x9 sheet cake with no problem...and you don't need to make seperate cakes for the records unless you want them to be higher than the sheet cake. You just do the records with rolled out black fondant cut like a record. Use a small plate to cut out your black fondant, then take a round cookie cutter for the center.Now you have a record :) Buttons and knobs should be made with a gumpast/fondant mixture. If you don't have gumpaste, you can just put some tylose in your fondant. Let them dry completely before adding them to the cake...As far as covering the whole sheetcake, use any color fondant you like. Can't wait to see this when it's done! Post pics

I'm still deciding if I want the records to be higher or not hehe I just want it perfect. If I get it done just right I will definitely post pictures :) Fingers crossed that I can do this since this will be my first time making a cake that actually has detail lol

Just bake the 9x13 and make the records out of gumpaste and dry well, you could use a real record to lightly impress it to get the rings, if you want to elevate it, add another round of fondant under it, before adding the dried record. The record won't be eaten, as it will be dried and hard. Impressing it is fast and would look more real.
I would not cover the cake with black fondant, rather with dark grey, the records are black
You can premake the records and all the knobs, check sizing by making them fit on the back of the pan, having them ready before even starting to bake will help with keeping you calm, as you know, that the details are already taken care of
Good luck with this project. It looks like a lot of fun. I just wanted to give you a quick recommendation on the fondant you are going to make, and maybe your recipe suggests this, but after making the fondant, wrap the entire batch in plastic and seal well to allow it to set up over night. Then divide your batch into 1 pound blocks and wrap each really well in plastic wrap and then again with aluminum foil. When I make my fondant it seems to stay very fresh and soft for some time by taking those measures to seal it well.

AWell I guess the cake turned out okay. My husband loves the way it looks but I don't really like it. But hey its my first difficult cake so at least I tried.
