My First Flooding/embroidery Cookies
Baking By Ducky316 Updated 16 Apr 2013 , 9:21pm by LizzieAylett
Now, the recipe I followed for the royal icing, did not tell me to sift my sguar, so of course the tip kept clogging like crazy...I ended up having to use a spoon! I made a new batch of icing of course for the embroidery and didn't have any trouble.I know the flooding is not great...uneven and air pockets, but aside from that, what do you think?
The brush embroidery is beautiful, if the flooding would have been better, the whole cookies would've been exquisit. The good thing is, you know what went wrong. Next time flood more of the cookie, up to the rim and then brush. Are the cookies drop cookies? Cut cookies would look better as well, especially as the brush embroidery is such a fine technique, that just looks nicer on cut cookies (I leave out the leavening agent to get better results)
Thank you Marie!
Hey Ursula :) I didn't make the cookies....They were store bought. I just wanted to see if I could do it. I agree cut cookies will look better, but like I said this was just for practice. I probably won't do the cookies again unless someone orders them, I wanted to see if I could manage embroidery on a cookie before I attempt to do it on a cake :)
make some now and then post the pics, I'm sure, if your customers see cut out cookies with that kind of brush embroidery, you will get the orders. At the moment all they see are irregular cookies with beautiful piping, Make some cut outs, take photos and wow your neighbours, the orders will come after that
I think they are beautiful! Is it possible to do flood icing with buttercream? They would taste better I would think.
I'm not a huge fan royal icing but I have used it for decorated cookies. Perhaps the reason you got air bubbles is because of the uneven texture of the cookies. Anyway, if you did them for practice I'd say you are ready for prime time!
Thank you for the comments everyone! I don't think you can "flood" with butter cream, but if its crusting, I don't see why would couldn't do embroidery on it, it just won't be as smooth as flooding...I know royal icing tastes pretty bad, but why can't you add flavor to it? I flavored the pink royal with a touch of cherry flavoring...made a world of difference!
Ursula, I'm going to take your advice and do it again with cut cookies...Now to find a rolled sugar cookie dough I can work with...The last few times I attempted sugar cookies, it was a disaster! LOL
Thanks everyone
You did a very good job on the cookies!! They look very cute!! Has anyone ever tried doing this on a cake? I am sure it would look good on cakes too. One day I will try it on cakes but I will probably try it with butter cream instead of royal icing.
Oh yes it can be done on fandant which is why I wanted to practice on a cookie...I'd rather screw up a cookie than my fondant! And thank you!!!
Very nice and good try. A novice will never know the difference. It can only get better from now on. I bet your next attempt will be better than the first. Another skill under your belt. As they say, practice makes perfection.
I wish I could get a handle on the flooding. I guess practice makes perfect, mine was a disaster! You did a GREAT job!!!!
AThey came out beautiful! I've been wanting to try this technique. Maybe for Mothers Day.
