AIs it ok to make buttercream frosting with a hand held mixer or do you have to have a standing mixer because I don't have one. Will it come out the same?

I use the recipe that's been on the back of the C&H powdered sugar box since before I was born, and I mix it with an ordinary dinner fork and a substantial amount of elbow-grease.

 

That, of course, wouldn't work for a whipped BC. Although maybe the appropriate type of whisk might. Certainly they were making BC before anybody invented power-driven mixers.

Yes, it certainly can be done.  It depends on the mixer, but when you use it to make icing it can wear out faster.  Most icing recipes will improve when mixed at med to low speed for up to 10 minutes.  Doing that for 6 months will be hard on the motor!
