AI have my first topsy turvy cake for Saturday, and the c wants smooth BC frosting (viva paper towel method) and chocolate clay designs. Anyone know if these two work well together? I will use pink chocolate clay stripes on bottom tier and polka dots on top tier. Your opinions are appreciated. BTW, the c does NOT want any type of fondant on her cake. TYIA

They work fine.  You will need to brush the back of your chocolate designs with a thin layer of corn syrup or piping gel to make it stick properly to the icing crust.

You can also use a bit of fresh BC to adhere them.
