Do you think there's a customer out there that would ever want a 'needlepoint' or 'burlap' cake ?
I've been experimenting and came up with these two kind of bizarre ways to use SugarVeil with a new mat that we have ('Woven' - it looks like Aida cloth http://www.sugarveil.com/mat/sugarveil-mat.htm).
Think one of these is a keeper, or [ha] should I keep on thinking)?
I can see the top sample incorporated into a cake for someone who is into needlepoint, embroidery or other needlecrafts. I could see the bottom one as part of the decorations for a fall wedding theme with sunflowers or mums, or a harvest themed celebration. It might even work for a more harvest themed halloween cake. I'd want the needlepoint one in different colors myself, but the burlap bow is perfect
I think they're beautiful. Who doesn't love cross stitch and that bow would so rock a shabby chic wedding cake. Picture it just like that in a pearly white or ivory or soft pink....with some field flowers. Awesome.
The burlap bow would be absolutely perfect with peach basket cakes, with slice-of-tree cakes, with farm cakes like a sack of potatoes, you can see many ways to use your wonderful idea.
The needlepoint needs some work--I don't like the sharp edge that the frame gives. There are lots of patterns out there for stitched covers for jam jars and you might translate those into circles for small cakes for a farm festival or farmers market.
PS that weave is needlepoint canvas weave NOT "Aida" which is a trademarked closed fabric
Thank you all for the feedback - and the great ideas, too! Very much appreciated.
And thank you BakingIrene for the correction in terminology - needlepoint is totally unfamiliar territory for me.
AYes there is a customer who wants burlap on her wedding cake. I have been looking for what feels like days for a way to make burlap out f fondant. I'm so excited to find this post. Thank you for thinking outside the box.
AI have a bride coming tomorrow who wants burlap, as well. I just can't justify the expense of the molds, as gorgeous as they are!
ANever mind the last post I just realized,it is available now! Will be ordering! Thanks for the show and tell.
I have a bride who wants burlap. How did you tie the bow without tearing it? This would be an adorable cupcake topper.

Totero, Anna said it perfectly. Also, brush some powdered cocoa on the Woven Confectioners' Mat before spreading with white SugarVeil. And while the SugarVeil is still a bit tacky in the mat, dust more cocoa on top, too, so both sides of the 'Burlap' are the same rough brown color. For the edges, use sharp snips to create frays. Here are a few more shots of the Woven Mat: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151305699139893.490927.58910664892&type=3. And here are photos of making a bow (but no need to 'hem' the edges when working with the SugarVeil burlap): http://www.sugarveil.com/information/pdf/acdm.pdf. Thank you!

YAY! What is my prize? lol!
AI see how the burlap is done but how do you create individual looking stitching effect with Sugarveil? I'm not familiar with Sugarveil.:)
Hmmm...Anna, will have to think on that. We'll be giving away an Icing Dispenser on Facebook in the near future - how's that for a tip?! http://facebook.com/sugarveilicing

I would almost give my first born child for one of those! It is on my list! (My first born is a twin though, so you would have to take them both, lol)
If I had the dispenser, I would HAVE to get the needlepoint mold, so I could drag out all my old cross stitching pattern books and become obsessed again ;-)

Wow, I have been a liker of your page for a LOOONG time, but hadn't looked at it for a few months, how awesome is that black and red cake?? Truly amazing, the skill and patience involved!! And impossible to do without Sugarveil!
Thanks, Anna. Here's another interesting thing you can do with the Woven Mat: Peel the SugarVeil woven piece, and make six rectangles by piping/flooding royal icing all round each rectangle border. When dry, pipe a line of SugarVeil to join each rectangle into a box form. The royal icing gives SugarVeil enough support to make a box structure:
P.S. Keep the twins; send your cross stich books

Nicci, the stitching is done with the Icing Dispenser, a hand-held, air-powered way to pipe really intricate lines. Here's what it looks like: http://www.sugarveil.com/icing_dispenser/index.htm

You would use the icing dispenser. It has different cartridges that you would fill with your colored sugarveil, put a tiny tip on it, and go to town! The dispenser is powered by a little air pump, so you don't get the hand fatigue you would get with royal icing and the sugar veil is smoother, so you don't have to run it through your pantyhose before you pipe with it!!! Cool, huh? It is on my short list!

UGH! I knew I shouldn't have answered the phone to take that payment! How embarrassing! I started my post before you sent yours, I swear! lol!
The twins are very well behaved, and they are out of school net week, so you could just take them for the summer ;-)
The box is so cool! Does Sugarveil work well with Isomalt? Some isomalt jewels would be pretty in there, so would a gum paste rose!
Yes, SugarVeil filigree is wonderful with isomalt jewel centers. Here's a with a gumdrop center used with SugarVeil, to give you the general impression:
I think we need to hire you as a SugarVeil ambassador. Thank you for spreading the word!
Are you sure they aren't Cepacol lozenges? lol It is still a very pretty look ;-)
Sugarveil molds and the dispenser have been on my short list for about 4 years :-( I have raised my prices, and will be doing a bridal show on the second of June where I hope to attract a more spendy bride, and as soon as someone mentions "lace" and "credit card info" in the same sentence, I will go straight to order them! I have looked at every cake with sugarveil on the web, and the dresses, and such, lol, but so far I have only used it for webs. Big, FAT webs, since I don't have the dispenser, hahaha. Surprisingly, I have done several webs, with Monster High cakes, and my gothic wedding cakes. And guitar strings.
I was so glad to find this thread as it helped me to fulfill an order I had for last weekend. They insisted on having a stucco effect cake with the only ornamentation being burlap flowers. I told them I would not do real burlap as it is not food safe. So, I made these Sugarveil burlap flowers instead. The customer loved it! Thanks again for being a lifesaver and enabling me to fill this cake order!
