Opening up another session of the FNCC! Who's up? Whatcha workin' on?
This week I only had one cake, a Penguin Birthday Cake. I had such fun making the penguins and the snowmen they were decorating. I put the entire cake together this afternoon so it is done now and ready for a Sunday morning delivery. I'm going to appreciate this easy week come next week when I have not only a wedding cake but Office party treats to make as well. I will post photos of the Penguin cake on Sunday!
What is up in your neck of the woods?
Well, I'm going to bed so that I can get up early in the morning and bake my daughter's birthday cake.......CANDYLAND. Will sleep thinking about what to use for decorations on it.
Glad to see that I'm not the only one who dreams of cake construction! I swear my mind is overly concerned the night before assembly! LOL! Can't wait to see your cake!
Good Evening Cat and all, It has been quite a while since I have posted, things have been overwhelmingly busy, but its great! I opened an actual shop a few weeks ago and things have completely exploded since. I am really the only one in my area that does the kind of cakes that I do and apparently people are loving it! Which is great, I couldn't be happier.
Delivered 10 dozen cupcakes this morning, and I have a smash cake, 2 tire cakes for twin boys, a beach cake for 50 and 2 giant cupcakes all for tomorrow. Shouldn't be to late of a night, they are all pretty close to being done.
I will look for your penguin cake! I LOVE penguins they are soo adorable.
Wow...you sound swamped! Someday I dream of having my own store front...someday<G>. For now I'm a one woman show so two cakes a week is swamped for me! LOL! Have a GREAT week and I hope to see photos of some of these cakes coming out of your shop!
A baby shower cake for a neighbor. The theme is trains.
Then I have a Christmas package cake that I'm doing to cheer a neighbor up that got laid off a couple of days ago.
This weekend is all about sugar-free and gluten-free desserts for a party. I've got Mini Lemon Bundts, Red Velvet Cheesecake Swirl Brownies, Strawberry Santas, Sugar Cookies (yes they are SF and GF), Chocolate Peppermint Sandwich Cookies, and maybe some Red Velvet Cupcakes.
I stacked, carved and crumbcoated a cake for a competition on Sunday. Can't wait to decorate it tomorrow. Actually, I have mixed feelings... I've been putting every spare minute into it for the past 2 weeks; I'll be really glad to be done with it even though I'm excited about it. It's a decoraing contest but involves tasting, too so I have to make a small tasting cake. I also entered the cupcake competition. I bit off almost more than I can chew with this.
shanienee, I'd love a reason to make a candy land cake :). Brettley, congrats on your shop! Cat, I can't wait to see your penguin cake.
So are you making a full train or just the engine or???
What a nice gift of the package...hope it brightens their day!
Wow Csue! That's a LOT on your plate! Sounds like a yummy plate too<G>
Elcee...so you are decorating a cake on a dummy form and then presenting a cutting cake too? Interesting! I keep saying I'm going to enter a competition but never have. Most of my issue is that there are none near me so I'd have to travel a LONG way just to compete! Let us know how it goes!
I am a one woman show.... I don't have a storefront, so maybe shop isn't the right word. Just a kitchen for now. I want to see how this goes first before I decide to do an actual storefront. Have to keep the costs low for now. See how things pan out. There is definitely room for a storefront, someday I hope.
Elcee: I hope you post pictures, I am looking forward to seeing them. You do such beautiful work. I wish we had comptetitions and stuff like that where I am from. Maybe someday.
Oh no! Not a full train. A two tiered stacked round cake, with a choo-choo train cutout filled with things babies need around the side of the bottom tier.
How CUTE! Please do post a photo here when you get it done?
Feel free to share some of those sugar free and gluten free recipes. Especially the gluten free ones. I want to make something for my team at work and 1 of the ladies has to eat gluten free.
Hi Cat and everyone,
Just one cake for me this week , a two tier for a birthday with orchids and butterflies.
Brett, that sounds exhausting , I would love to do more than I do but my health doesn't allow it unfortunately .
Elcee, I love entering comps , I am already starting to think about what I will do next year and actually what I will do for the National conference in 2015, I have been told in no uncertain terms by the other decorators in my club that I WILL be entering.
Can't wait to see everyone's cakes . The penguins sound super cute.
Our cake decorating branch had its Christmas party today . It was great to sit and relax for a while and of course talk cake .
This week we have another shopping centre display, so I will be sitting in the Aircon , getting all my decorations done for all the CHristmas cakes I have sitting there looking naked at the moment.
Have a great week everyone.
Here they are. Both of these were firsts in some manner.
The baby shower cake was my first time making gumpaste shoes.
The Christmas package was my first time covering a square cake in fondant. First time making a box and paneling. First time airbrushing with a stencil, (I'll stick to buttercream and royal with my stencils, much more defined look). I learned I can't cut straight or measure accurately and I need to let pearls dry a bit before trying to move them on the cake. Good learning experiences.
Beautiful cakes, tdovewings! I love it when you can learn something from what you're doing. I didn't check in to this discussion on Friday because I was running around like crazy trying to get the materials, ingredients and instruction sheets together for a gingerbread house course I was starting Saturday morning. Got over to the place and nobody showed up! Oh, well, I have everything I need for next year, when I will plan the advertising more carefully and give myself more lead time! I love baking and decorating, but I've got a WHOLE lot to learn about marketing! I guess my daughters, granddaughters and I will be making several gingerbread houses this week - can't let all that stuff go to waste!
Chelle...sounds like a gorgeous cake...love both orchids and butterflies! After this week I have a week off for Christmas and then my last big cake of the year on the 29th before my Winter Break.
They are gorgeous cakes...really love the baby cake too! The shoes are fun but it's an experience the first time. I have yet to make a cake where I haven't learned something new and I think that's the part that makes me like being a custom cake artist. I think if I worked in a shop doing the same type of cakes over and over again I'd go mad.
Next year make people pay the fee before the class in order to "book" their place in the class and most of everyone will show. It was a lesson I learned the same way you did<G>. I, too, spent part of my time today making a gingerbread house..or starting it anyways..we will add candy tomorrow after my son gets home from school.
Attached is my penguin cake! I had tons of fun making it and everyone adored it.
I always take payment in advance for classes. Class fees are non-refundable. Everone always shows up because they've paid for it!
Great advice, catlharper and Godot, and it will be my policy from now on! This course kind of got set up on the spur of the moment and the woman who owns the studio where I would be giving it thought several of her students would be interested. Not so much, as it turns out, but now that I have the instructions, the patterns and the list of materials together, I'll start promoting it around the end of September next year and get at least 50% of everyone's non-refundable tuition up front. I appreciate your weighing in! Also, I LOVE penguin cakes, catlharper, and yours is faboo!
