Hello all, is there a way to make a crusting buttercream without adding an entire pound of PS to one cup of Butter/Shortening? Thanks!

Unfortunately, no.  The butter to fat ratio is what makes it crusting.  You can get buttercream smooth without relying on a crusting recipe.  You just have to practice.
