I just purchased what I thought was brown colored Wilton fondant. Once home, I realized it was brown for being a tootsie roll tasting chocolate. Not a bad thing as Wilton's fondant is not known for flavor. Needing some parts of a my fondant piece to be white, I pulled out Americolor BrightWhite gel. First time using both the brown fondant and BrightWhite, I started painted as I normally do - mixing the gel color with a bit of vodka. I expected the pieces would need a couple of coats of the white coloring, but was surprised the first layer yielded a crackled finish.
Has anyone else experienced this? If you had to guess, is the crackled look the result of the chocolate fondant or the Americolor BrightWhite? I'm leaning toward the fondant being the problem (surface resisting the color) as it feels a bit different than the white I've purchased in the past.
I've thrown away my first effort; not happy at all about having to cut out new pieces. ???
I don't really know, but have you tried using the white gel alone without the vodka? Or perhaps using a bit of melted Crisco instead of vodka?
No, I didn't try that, though I did use less vodka on the second coat. UGH! I opted to reverse things - used white fondant from FondX (ELITE) and colored in the areas needing to be brown instead, dusting those spaces with pearl dust. I think it'll be o.k. I am disappointed in the Wilton brown. I have another project I planned to use it on - would require painting it black. I hate working gel into fondant, especially when I'm trying to achieve true black or red, the reason I tend to paint on the color. Guess I'd better go the traditional route on the upcoming project - a Batman cake for my grandson, due around Christmas. Can't mess that one up! :D Thanks for the suggestion, C.
