I am curious as to how many of these posted cakes are for real, or just done on dummies for the sake of decorating.. I love to decorate, but hate to waste on dummy cakes!! What does everyone else do?

All of my photos are of cakes that were created for clients. I was featured in Cake Central Magazine. That cake was also a real cake (didn't have any dummies at the time).

Most people who are posting cake dummy photos will say so in the body of the post.

They are all so beautiful! And can you tell me how you get such great shots?

Most of my photos are of real cakes. I've attempted to mention when it is a dummy. Many others also mention if their creation is a dummy.

If mine are for a competition or for a display , they are often dummies, As I am not carting heavy cake around to these events and it means I get to show them off more than once.
I don't really have anyone to eat cake if I want to make one just for decorating purposes and I am not going to waste money on ingredients .
I make real cake for paying clients , however you don't always get to do what you want to or try out new techniques. I have a mixture of both real cake and dummies in my gallery. I don't really think they look much different.

Apart from 4 cakes, all of my cakes in the gallery are cakes I've sold to clients.

Out of all of the cakes in my albums 2 of them are partially fake. There are 2 wedding cakes that the bottom tier is a dummy (they wanted a specific look at a reduced cost). That is also mentioned in the pictures. Other than that. all real here.

I am purchasing a new store that has tons more display room so I will be making few dummies for that. But that is just to show off the up to date styles mostly.

My photos are real cakes, but I just decorated a dummy cake. I LOVE my dummy cake drum...I can wash it and re-use it. The "cake" I decorated yesterday was ugly, so I am glad I didn't bake one and waste ingredients. It will be nice to have cakes that I decorated as examples without using real ingredients.

Well, now I know why RI stringwork has become a lost art. After all that work, and looking so beautiful, it crumbles as soon as you touch it!! What a mess!!
